Room Request! The Hotel Sacher Salzburg

The Austrian city of Salzburg has laid claim to a number of rich moments in history—it is the city that gave us Mozart (he was born there) and also served as the backdrop for the classic 1965 film The Sound of Music. Equally historic is the city’s Grand Dame property, The Hotel Sacher Salzburg[1], which dates back to 1866 and has hosted the likes of Julie Andrews, Elizabeth Taylor and Tom Hanks.

Celebrity guests are no doubt drawn to Sacher Salzburg’s intimate feel. Despite its sprawling façade, there are just 113 rooms—each furnished with dark wood and carefully sourced antiques. But the hotel’s biggest draw is arguably the view. Sacher Salzburg, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, is the only property in the city situated on the banks of the Salzach River; nearly every room gets a glimpse of the Baroque Old Town and the famed Fortress Hohensalzburg, the largest 11th-century castle in Europe[2].

We spoke to General Manager Angelique Lassiwe about which room is considered the hotel’s most sought-after. Here’s what she had to say.

The most requested room:
One of the most popular rooms is the One Bedroom Suite “Toscanini,” named after the famous Italian conductor. He was one of the most acclaimed musicians of the late 19th and of the 20th century, renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and he also stayed at the Sacher Hotel.

What makes it so special:
The view and the interior design. The décor is very elegant—the furniture is made from antique wood and our carpets were designed especially for the Hotel Sacher Salzburg. The Toscanini Suite is furnished in red, with an electric fireplace and a little balcony overlooking the city.

The rate:
High Season rate is $1,930; $1,258 during low season.

Your personal favorite:
One of the corner Junior Suites.

They have a small balcony, where you can enjoy breakfast overlooking the city.

Fun fact:
The Hotel Sacher Salzburg is the only Grand Hotel in Salzburg. It opened in 1876—next year the hotel will celebrate its 150th anniversary. The city of Salzburg is best known as the backdrop for The Sound of Music, which was shot here 50 years ago. Julie Andrews stayed at the Sacher while shooting in 1965.
