Brooklyn Townhouse
In this 1850 Brooklyn Heights townhouse, designed for a young couple and their children, Scheerer aimed for an unstuffy design. "We wanted to let it breathe and let it accommodate a whole lifetime of stuff," the designer explains. Expecting them to occupy the house for a long time, Scheerer wanted to create a background for their own personal additions while still incorporating solid design elements.
Upper East Side Dining Room
To freshen up this once-stuffy space, Scheerer brought in a series of black-and-white photographs to "lend a modern vibe." The apartment, on Manhattan's Upper East Side, was intended to have a patrician air, which the designer feels is accomplished with the combination of the modern art and the traditional furnishings.
Long Island Farmhouse
According to Scheerer, the exposed beam living room of this French-inspired Long Island farmhouse "epitomizes the word cozy." The house was already "vaguely Norman" and the client was a Francophile family, so a French feel, despite the Long Island location, was a "natural fit," says Scheerer.
Mount Desert Island, Maine Living Room
The living room of this home on Maine's Mount Desert Island was meant to look as if it was "thrown together over time" according to Scheerer. With the combination of different styles like the Belter sofa, from a clients old home, and the Saarinen coffee table, the house exudes an "improvisational air."
Hobe Sound Living Room
This bright and high-ceilinged Florida living room achieves a warm, coastal vibe without the "clichés of tropical decorating." The house, which has an "Alhambresque" feel to it, is meant to achieve an exotic vibe. Since the house is so significant in size, the design was approached with a not overly serious air, with a bit a whimsy and bunch of styles mixed together.
Harbour Island Kitchen
This kitchen in the designer's own home in the Bahamas' Harbour Island, is somewhat of a departure from his other projects. Scheerer kept the structure of the room intact to retain the rustic, old Bahamian feel. Scheerer, who tries to live simply when in the Bahamas, says that the home is tied to his other work "through atmosphere," which he believes should be a focus of any good designer.
