Located less than 40 miles from London, the lodge was built for Henry VII, who reigned from 1485 to 1509; it's thought to be where he first met Catherine of Aragon. The façade was added in 1720 or 1740. Haslam took over the lease in the mid-'70s.
This dining room chair is covered with Pierre Frey's Ming, which Haslam sprayed with tea to soften its whites. What looks like wallpaper is actually a hand-painted replica—complete with seams and torn edges—of the paper in the home that was too ragged to keep.
The fireplace in the lodge's old hall is surrounded by the most British of furnishings—a fender where guests can warm themselves or put wet clothes to dry. The terra-cotta floor is buffed weekly with South African cobra wax polish.
The sofa in the sitting room is covered with Jaisalmer by John Stefanidis, which is beloved by Haslam for its sturdiness. The room has many other favorites of his: a flokati rug, busts, engravings, tan lampshades that cast flattering golden light, and old china to use as ashtrays.
This guest room showcases another interior-design technique of Haslam's: Combining stripes of the same color but of different widths. The wallpaper is by Mauny, and the bedside lamps were made from baroque altar candlesticks.
