Headlining Eyeliner
Makeup artists are always experimenting with new ways to design around the eye. While some techniques are for professionals only (like Rochas’ Sharpie eye) others can easily be replicated in real life, like the half-eye at Rag & Bone and slightly askew under-eye line at Ohne Titel.

Pony Up
Lazy girls, rejoice; no-nonsense ponytails are in! Models at Stella McCartney looked as if they had just jumped out of the shower and into their looks, while at Miu Miu, Guido Palau doused models’ hair in Redken’s Stay High 18 gel to mousse (available in April) and Forceful 23 hairspray for a somewhat ‘bad girl’ look.

Loose Lipped
No lipliner? No problem. This season’s lipstick-on-the-fly look is effortless while still packing a punch of saturated color. At 3.1 Phillip Lim, makeup artist Francelle Daly used a brush to apply NARS’ lipcolor in VIP Red (out this Fall) to the models for more of a “bold, empowered lip” than anything too perfect and pretty.

Back to Blush
The makeup regimen mainstay was given new life this season. Backstage at Thakoon, makeup artist Diane Kendal layered two blush tones on the models’ eyes (NARS’ Dual-Intensity blush in Craving and Fervor) to imitate the hues of the northern lights. James Kaliardos used the same Craving blush on models’ eyelids at Rodarte, complementing the Swarovski crystals lining their lower lash.

Ultramodern Updos
New takes on classic updos came in a variety of shapes this season. Balenciaga sent down models with tight and sculptural chignons (and slicked-down sideburns!) while Dior presented a futuristic side ponytail that was anything but ‘80s. Even the beehive-esque ponytails at Prada were pinned down to reveal punkish ends at the models’ neck.

Skin Is In
OK, it has been ‘in’ for a few seasons now. But this fall even designers like Gucci ditched their characteristic glamorous makeup look for something pared down and focused on the beauty of skin. Models at Jason Wu were really only wearing Lancome’s Nude Miracle foundation and a touch of shimmer on the cheekbones so the girls’ natural complexion came through. “The secret is to really have a great moisturizer underneath,” revealed artist Diane Kendal. She loves the brand’s new Absolue Precious Oil.

Different Strokes
From the uneven cerulean blue eye shadow at Céline to Proenza Schouler’s abstract painted lid, designers proved you don’t have to have a steady hand for beautiful eye makeup! At Fendi, artist Peter Philips embraced the messy marks that mascara leaves behind by extending them with black eyeliner for a graphic but pleasantly imperfect look.
