Goodbye to the London Olympics

The 2012 Summer Games started off with a peculiarly British bang with Danny Boyle’s budget-busting, jaw-dropping opener starring The Queen! James Bond! Jetpacks! The National Health Service! Sir Paul McCartney singing "Hey Jude"! but closed with a bit of a whimper with the dusted-off likes of Monty Python and The Spice Girls. In between, however, were thrills galore: the performances of golden girl gymnasts Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber; Michael Phelps’ reaching the record-breaking 22-medal mark; the five medals and countless one-night stands of Ryan Lochte; Usain Bolt demonstrating that humans are indeed capable of flight; and well-earned golds for the USA men’s basketball and women's soccer teams. Sure, the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, are just two years away, but we’re storing our Team USA pennants til 2016 in Rio.

Goodbye to Prince Harrys Pants

Okay, we’ll skip the standard crown jewels jokes about the spare-to-the-British-throne’s romp in Las Vegas. We continue to be wild about Harry for this reason: While brother William refuses to even kiss his wife for the Olympic Kiss Cam, the younger sibling has proven he's always game for a good time. Which, we think, makes him an honorary American. Should the wrath of The Firm prove too great for Harry, we'll gladly offer him sanctuary on our shores.

The tabloid rumor mill quickly kicked into overdrive—the union ended because a marriage contract had expired; it crumbled due to Scientology concerns; it was aided and abetted by secret calls from Nicole Kidman—yet this Hollywood divorce was quietly resolved in a tidy two months. So, speculation now switches to a new topic: Who will be number four? To the women and couches of America: Prepare yourselves.

They made their mark in such different ways, but with their passing, the world suddenly felt a little bit less witty.

Goodbye to Linsanity in New York

Over one weekend in late July, we found the cure for Linsanity: a move to Houston. The Knicks point guard, who had given a 6’3” shot in the arm to a lagging team, abruptly accepted a three-year, $25 million contract with the Rockets and ditched the city. While the Knicks and New York fans should recover quite soon, we may need to give the headline writers at the Post and the News some more time to mourn.

Goodbye to the Prospect of Vice President Christie

After Chris Christie declared that a presidential run was out of the question last fall, Republicans and independent voters attracted to his tell-it-like-it-is approach consoled themselves that the New Jersey governor might end up being a heartbeat away as Romney's number two. Alas, the plainspoken politico didn't make the ticket, but we're somewhat relieved he won't have to serve as attack dog—the role of top dog suits him much better.

Goodbye to the Ever-Upward Rise of Facebook

On the heels of a disappointing, glitch-ridden May IPO, the social networking juggernaut went on to take bigger lumps this summer as lawsuits proliferated, the share price dropped and Mark Zuckerberg’s hoodie was shown to not be bulletproof after all. Still, even if fewer people are clicking the “Like” button, the operation and Zuck continue to be worth billions of dollars.

Goodbye to Ann Curry on Today

In late June, Today anchor Ann Curry said a tearful and awkward goodbye to the morning TV show after 15 years. Her seat was warm when producers installed Savannah Guthrie there as part of an effort to offset a ratings slide against rival Good Morning America. One question remains: Has Today lost its mojo along with a familiar face?
