Have a Seat With Philippe Nigro

If Philippe Nigro[1] hasn’t been on your radar up to this point, he’s about to be. Just named Designer of the Year 2014 by Now! Design, the French-born furniture designer recently gave DuJour contributor Lisa Cohen a tour of his Paris Maison & Objet[2] exhibition, where he highlighted the prototypes and finished designs that contributed to his growth as a major designer.

Originally from Nice, France, Nigro studied applied arts and product design at La Martinière School and École Boulle and moved to Milan to learn Italian design. There, he interned at the esteemed De Lucchi agency, beginning a definitive career in collaborative work. DePadova, Foscarini, Ligne Roset, Hermès and Baccarat are just a few of the lauded brands in the design space that have partnered with Nigro with through the years. Today, he jet sets between Milan and Paris working with clients on furniture, lighting, interior design, events and scenography projects.

His first project was the “spiral shelf” in 2005, but his second piece was the game changer. The “Insection” sofa for Lignet Roset (2009) permanently mapped Nigro on the design scene—it’s not surprising that it remains to be his favorite piece. “It got me thinking in new ways,” he says, a spark that ignited an all-new creative process for working with all his clients. Major thought is given to the details of each design and how it will be used on a practical level. Importance is placed on proportion, and pieces like the sofa are meant to feel “open.”

For the Maison & Objet show this year, the new introductions for Lignet Roset—including the Cosse, Fold and La Lumiere Noire (pictured below)—make up a collection inspired by nature. The pieces are designed to be small-space friendly, continuing the legacy of Nigro’s design process. Take a look at a few of the new pieces showcased at Maison & Objet below.
