Each week, there’s an avalanche of upcoming albums, films, books, theater and art—from monumental new voices in culture to guilty pleasures worth indulging in. We’re here to help narrow down what deserves your attention. Our picks for the week of April 29th are below:
The Album: This week New York-based duo Beacon, who’ve already won a legion of fans with two well received E.P.s, release their first full-length, The Ways We Separate, a 10-song collection of R&B-influenced minimalist electronica. Out Tuesday, April 30, 2013.
The Movie: Steve Coogan, Julianne Moore, Alexander Skarsgård and the adorable Onata Aprile star in What Maisie Knew, a smart, moving contemporary retelling of the classic Henry James story about a group of ridiculous adults battling over a young girl. Opens Friday, May 3, 2013.
The Exhibit: German painter, filmmaker and all-around art weirdo Hans Richter—who collaborated with Man Ray and Marcel Duchamp—gets the retrospective treatment from LACMA with Hans Richter: Encounters, a collection of 150 of the late artist’s works, including never-released films. Opens Sunday, May 5, 2013.
