Each week[1], there’s an avalanche of upcoming albums, films, books, theater and art—from monumental new voices in culture to guilty pleasures worth indulging in. We’re here to help narrow down what deserves your attention. Our picks for the week of July 22th are below: 

The Movie:  The HBO documentary The Cheshire Murders[2] explores the details of a horrific 2007 burglary and triple homicide at the Connecticut home of the Petit family in Cheshire, Connecticut. It’s a harrowing, fascinating story worth tuning in to. Airs Monday.  

The Album: On their sophomore release, Jinx, Weekend[3], the Brooklyn-based, San Francisco-bred rock group, retains the swirling sonic sound that made them an indie rock favorite, but buttress it with better recording and more confident songwriting. It’s not too late for an album of the summer and this is proof. Out Tuesday.  

The Book: David Gilbert’s smart, epic & Sons[4] begins at a funeral, a fitting start to a book at its best lies in emotional trenches. Following the Salinger-like author A.N. Dyer, the novel explores fame, family and New York City in a compelling, beautifully written saga. Out Tuesday.   

The Play: The second show of this summer’s Shakespeare in the Park offerings, Love’s Labour’s Lost[5] is a new musical adaptation of the Bard’s comedy, directed by the Tony-nominated Alex Timbers and with music by Michael Friedman (both of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson). Opens Tuesday.
