Photographer Steven Meisel is world-famous for his unexpected and inventive take on fashion. Since the 1990s when he first introduced the world to the grunge aesthetic, Meisel has been redefining global trends using everything from modern art[1] to architecture as a source of inspiration for his photography, which has appeared in unforgettable campaigns for brands including Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and Prada.
Beginning January 23, the New York City outpost of the art auction house Phillips will exhibit a traveling selling exhibition of Meisel’s prolific photography, titled Role-Play. The international show includes images from the early days of Meisel’s career to his more recent photographs.
Here, DuJour gets a sneak peek at some of the most notable images in Meisel’s exhibition.
