With Valentine’s Day here and the weekend in our sights, emotions could be running high. Whether you’re desperately trying to lock in last-minute dinner reservations or you’re trying to forget it is the season of love, why not decompress with a few good tunes?
A new music video from Roman Lewis has us feeling self-reflective and self-aware, laced with romantic notions, of course. A collaborative track from singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez and rapper Tierra Whack garnered over 1.6 million streams on YouTube alone in just 24 hours and is now approaching 3.5 million, and offers a more emotional side to both artists.
Off the newly released and highly anticipated album from Justin Bieber we found one song in particular that stood out to us, and yes, it features Post Malone. With a song from pop darling Kim Petras[1] and a banger from producer Skott, this week’s Sound Bite is complete. See below for all five songs.
1. “Copy Cat” by Melanie Martinez feat. Tierra Whack
The pop singer-songwriter tapped rapper Tierra Whack to be the first featured artist on a Melanie Martinez song. Whack is celebrated for her eclectic visuals, quick tongue, and intense stage presence. “Copy Cat” is the perfect blend of Martinez’s glittery vocals and Whack’s speedy lyrical delivery, offering a powerful soundscape for listeners. “I’m so thrilled to be releasing this song with the most magical artist and insanely gifted lyricist, Tierra Whack,” Martinez says of the track. “This song was written years ago and from an empathetic perspective, even while in a very hurt place. We’re all told that imitation is flattery to ease the pain that the ego feels when other people get credited for our ideas and our work. But being human includes feeling a multitude of feelings, and naturally this song came about when expressing those very raw emotions.”
2. “Reminds Me” by Kim Petras
Kim Petras[1] not only released a new banger, but she also announced that she would be joining Camila Cabello as support on the European leg of Cabello’s The Romance Tour. The young singer’s latest single is an ode to a break-up, offering honest thoughts on why some things really do become ruined after a relationship ends. She sings, I can’t play that song ’cause it reminds me of you. I can’t watch that show ’cause it reminds me of you, and we’ve all had those feelings.
3. “Something to Care About” by Roman Lewis
British singer-songwriter Roman Lewis released his double EP, My First Failed Fairytale, featuring his previously released EP Heartbreak, and his new EP, Heartbreak (Forever). With a narrative rooted in reality, Lewis croons about love, lust, and loss from such a relatable point of view. On the already released song “Something to Care About,” Lewis shares how after the end of a relationship, he experienced a sense of clarity and understanding, without the metaphoric rose-colored glasses. The video showcases the breakdown of the relationship in such a poetic and pure way.
4. “Kodak & Codeine” by Skott
Swedish singer and producer Skott[2] has released her first song of 2020 and it is captivating. “Kodak & Codeine” is an anthem for heartbreak, highlighting how difficult it can be to leave a relationship even if you know in your heart it is the right thing to do. Of the song, Skott says, “You meet someone that seems to understand you in a way that no one else does, and together you create this bubble – it’s almost like you have this parallel galaxy where only the two of you exist. But then you realize it’s actually a one-man kingdom, and you’re not the one with the power.”
5. “Forever” by Justin Bieber feat. Post Malone and Clever
After what feels like years of waiting, listeners finally have Justin Bieber’s fifth album Changes to listen to, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The album features a number of love songs seemingly inspired by Bieber’s wife Hailey Bieber. One in particular is a serious bop, and features our favorite face-tatted artist, Post Malone[3]. “Forever” is a smooth track with some pretty specific lyrics about Hailey and Bieber’s transformation into a dutiful husband. He croons, You still intimidate me, keep me up on my toes now. Better man, what you made me, made me aware what I was missin’.
