Sound Bite: Jacob Banks, Alessia Cara & Childish Gambino

Take a good listen to our top five favorite new songs released this week

With two new songs from the ever-talented Childish Gambino, I think we’re all ready to move beyond Drake’s exhausting Scorpion. Childish Gambino has made a stark departure from his last release, the political “This Is America,” and created our summertime soundtrack. His song “Summertime Magic” will be on repeat this weekend, followed by the uptempo “Schedules” by Norwegian singer Sigrid. Since your weekend might not be spent entirely on the dance floor, slow it down with Alessia Cara’s “A Little More,” a song that was a birthday present from Cara to her fans. With a new EP from rockers DREAMERS and a powerful release from Jacob Banks that will be featured in the upcoming movie The Equalizer 2, starring Denzel Washington, you should be prepared for this weekend in terms of music. Take a listen to our top five new song releases below.

1. “In The Name of Love” by Jacob Banks

This at-times politically-charged singer-songwriter has been on an inspiring mission to spread love and a feeling of unity to his listeners. As a poetic lyricist, Banks is able to capture the heart-wrenching feeling of making sacrifices for love. Featured in the upcoming film The Equalizer 2, in theaters July 20, “In The Name of Love” feels like a cinematic work of art.

2. “Fake It ’Til You Make It” by DREAMERS

These grunge rockers are ready to show a more conceptual side to themselves with the release of the first EP of a series of three. Launch is made up of four songs including “Fake It ’Til You Make It,” a track with a catchy dance chorus complemented by a dreamy interlude. Following Launch, the band will release two other EPs. You can bet we’ll be staying tuned to this musical story.

3. “Schedules” by Sigrid

This 21-year-old Norwegian singer captured the world’s attention with her hit “Don’t Kill My Vibe” back in 2017. With “Schedules,” Sigrid has completed the track list for her sophomore EP RAW. With a youthful spirit and an infectious pop sound, we can guarantee you’ll be singing along to this track.

4. “A Little More” by Alessia Cara

This young songstress offers conversational lyrics that cut straight through to the listener’s heart and soul. With a soft rasp and a super laid-back style (think: white tee and jeans), Alessia Cara is a new breed of what a “star” should be in today’s society. “A Little More” was released as a birthday gift from Alessia Cara to her fans and as the song and video were both written, produced and shot by Cara herself, it’s a true execution of the artist’s vision.

5. “Summertime Magic” by Childish Gambino

Get ready for a little easy listening ear candy from Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino. The soft beat combined with the bright sounds of steel drums makes “Summertime Magic” a glittery summer banger. The song, packaged together as a “Summer Pack” with its counterpart single, “Feels Like Summer,” feel like a bit of a departure from Childish Gambino’s last release, “This Is America,” leading us to believe his upcoming album will be a kaleidoscope of music.
