Ahead of the weekend, we have rounded up five powerful new songs. We have a brand new powerfully pop single from Charli XCX, which will be featured on her upcoming album due out May 15. New ear candy from Australian singer-songwriter G Flip has us feeling romantic and emotional, but with a strength to endure. Weezer teamed up with Postmates to help support frontline workers during the outbreak of COVID-19 and pays tribute to the healthcare workers in their new song, “Hero.”
Hailee Steinfeld unveiled the first half of her two-part project Half Written Story and we chose one of the five songs as our favorite. “Your Name Hurts” is relatable and catchy with a heartbreaking narrative. With a new song from Kim Petras, our Sound Bite is complete. See below for all five songs.
1. “Hero” by Weezer
The latest release from veteran rockers Weezer is catchy, motivating, and a true feel-good song. “Hero” will be featured on the band’s upcoming album, Van Weezer, that was originally slated to be released in May but has since been postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The song and accompanying music video pays tribute to frontline workers helping COVID-19 patients. Weezer, Postmates, and Feed Hero Nurses organization teamed up to provide meals to nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles.
2. “Your Name Hurts” by Hailee Steinfeld
Singer-songwriter Hailee Steinfeld has released the first part of her two-part project, Half Written Story, and alongside the already-released songs “I Love You’s” and “Wrong Direction,” there are three new songs. “Your Name Hurts” is an honest release of emotions laced with heartbreak. The idea of having just the sound of someone’s name strike a nerve inside is vulnerable and relatable. Part two of Half Written Story will be released later this summer.
3. “Hyperfine” by G Flip
Electro-pop songstress G Flip has released her first new song since her debut album About Us. “Hyperfine” is bright and bold with a bouncy beat behind G Flip’s beloved honest lyrics. “I wrote this song after having silly little bickering fights with my partner. In relationships it’s so common to say “it’s fine” when it’s really not fine. If you care about someone, talk to them. In the context of what’s going on I thought it would be a good chance to drop a bit of a bop to sing along to and feel alive again in this time,” G Flip says of the song.
4. “Malibu” by Kim Petras
Kim Petras has offered listeners the most ideal summertime pop banger. “Malibu” is sparkly and hypnotic, with a playful vibe that is much needed right now. “‘Malibu’ is a return to color, the feeling of being in love, and the escapism pop that I love the most,” says Petras.
5. “I Finally Understand” by Charli XCX
Charli XCX has taken full advantage of being quarantined. The innovative artist has started working on a new album, how i’m feeling now, slated for release on May 15. The follow-up single to “claws” is “I Finally Understand” and it is a dance floor smash. The electronic song features typical pop tendencies while incorporating more unique sounds inspired by UK garage music and Baltimore club music.
