Sound Bite: H.E.R., lovelytheband, and A$AP Ferg

Discover our top five favorite new songs released this week

With the week coming to a close and the weekend in our sights, let’s turn up the volume on some good music. R&B phenom H.E.R. debuted a new song at this year’s Grammy Awards and it shows off a more mellow side to the artist. Our favorite pop rockers lovelytheband have released another banger that has us feeling so ready for festival season. Alex Ebert, most commonly known for his work under the moniker Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, has released his second solo album and with it comes a plethora of electronic sounds, enticing lyrics, and a bit of saxophone.

With a new song from rapper A$AP Ferg and a collaborative track from boyband and Good Charlotte’s Billy Martin, this week’s Sound Bite is complete. See below for all five of our favorite tracks.

1. “loneliness for love” by lovelytheband

This power pop trio made their way onto our Sound Bite back in 2018 with their catchy banger “alone.” On the band’s latest single, “loneliness for love,” their anthemic narrative continues to ring true. The track accepts heartbreak for exactly what it is while offering listeners a cathartic release through the pulsating chorus.

2. “Her Love” by Alex Ebert

Under the moniker Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Alex Ebert offered folk hits like “Home” back in 2010. Ten years later, Ebert’s new solo album I vs. I is a colorful adventure through experimental electronic sounds. The track “Her Love” stands out as a bright and sensual, with an impressive saxophone solo anchoring the song in romance.

3. “Death Note” by boyband feat. Billy Martin of Good Charlotte

This new song from Grammy-nominated producer boyband feels like a combination of Goody Grace and Post Malone. As the latest artist to sign with Dirty Hit Records, boyband offers a cool sound to all of his work. “Death Note” features Billy Martin of Good Charlotte, adding a punk vibe to the track. Of Martin approaching him, boyband says, “I recorded ‘Death Note’ when I was on a three-day binge of just doing records. It started with Billy Martin messaging me on Twitter … and I was just like, do you know who you are? you’re a legend, let’s make history.”

4. “Value” by A$AP Ferg

A surprise new song from rapper A$AP Ferg has us amped for the weekend. Produced by Razjah, “Value” feels like a hint at a new sound for the artist since last year’s Floor Seats EP. The song showcases Ferg’s intense energy and pays homage to former rap hits with retro-style production elements. More than anything though, “Value” demonstrates the talent that Ferg possesses.

5. “Sometimes” by H.E.R.

The two-time Grammy Award-winning artist performed her new single “Sometimes” at this year’s Grammy Awards while playing a grand piano. The song is a motivational anthem offering words of encouragement to listeners, as the singer croons, Sometimes shit don’t go your way, and sometimes you gon’ have those days, and sometimes you’ll feel out of place. You can’t promise me it’ll be the same, ‘cause sometimes change.
