Seriously, everyone loves a good glitter-infused pop song that transports you to some bright and bubbly world flooded with champagne and balloons. We do, at least. That’s why we’re jamming to Charli XCX‘s new music. On “5 in the Morning” we hear her edge come through a bit more, complimented by a catchy pop undertone. To contrast that sound, take a listen to rockers Coheed and Cambria’s new song that might bring you back to a darker, more angsty time in your life. The weekend is near so we’ve gathered our top five favorite new tracks from the week to usher you in. With an acoustic track from Fickle Friends to a sweet collaboration between Maroon 5 and none other than Cardi B, we’re already turning up the volume.
1. “The Dark Sentencer” by Coheed and Cambria
The longtime rockers Coheed and Cambria have enticed listeners with their hardcore lyrics and haunting visual components for years now. Their newest song is the first off their forthcoming album, expected to be released later this year. With a ten-minute video accompanying the track, frontman Claudio Sanchez can be heard reading the opening lines of his concept story that will pair with the album. Needless to say, the song is an earful.
2. “Girls Like You” by Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B
The third single off Maroon 5’s sixth studio album Red Pill Blues features the fearless rapper Cardi B in a softer light than we’ve seen in the past. The video stars a range of girls, including cameos from Millie Bobbie Brown, Ellen DeGeneres and Mary J. Blige. The video concludes with Levine embracing his wife Behati Prinsloo and new baby, and we just melt.
3. “Say No More” by Fickle Friends
Who isn’t a sucker for an acoustic track? Fickle Friends reimagined “Say No More” from their debut full-length album You Are Someone Else and it’s truly captivating. The band is slated to release a special EP later this year with new versions of select songs from the album. You can catch them on their North American tour this fall.
4. “5 in the Morning” by Charli XCX
Our favorite pop star is back with a banger. Currently on tour with Taylor Swift and Camila Cabello, Charli XCX has been teasing new music on social media for weeks. Her newest single features trap-infused production and a bright, summertime vibe. With the release of “5 in the Morning” comes the announcement that fans can expect new music all summer long. We’re ready.
5. “Helpless” by The Regrettes
These festival-favorites have teamed up with Lin-Manuel Miranda to create the newest addition to the Hamilton star’s “Hamildrop” series. Miranda has been introducing new Hamilton content under the name, “The Hamildrops” since 2017 including tracks from The Decemberists, Nas, Aloe Blacc and others. “Helpless” is from the original Hamilton soundtrack and has been remade into a glittery summer hit.
