Each week[1], there’s an avalanche of new albums, films, books, theater and art to take in—from monumental new voices in culture to guilty pleasures worth indulging in. We’re here to help narrow down what deserves your attention. Our picks for the week of April 22nd are below:
The Exhibit: Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art[2] mounts the first U.S. survey of the work of Swiss artist Urs Fischer[3]. Spread across two of MoCA’s buildings, the exhibition features not only paintings and sculptures from the artist’s long career, but also new works in clay made during recent weeks with the help of 1,500 volunteers. Through Sept. 8, 2013.
The Album: Nattily dressed French rockers Phoenix[4] are back with their fifth record, Bankrupt![5], a follow-up to 2009’s gold-record Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix[6]. The album, recorded on Michael Jackson’s Thriller console, boasts 10 songs (the bonus edition is said to have 71 tracks), including the exceedingly catchy lead single “Entertainment,” and makes a very solid case for catching the band of their current U.S. tour. Out Tuesday, April 23, 2013.
The Play: The inimitable Irish actress Fiona Shaw might be most widely known for her roles in the Harry Potter films or her turn as a witch on a recent season of True Blood[7], but the decorated Shaw is a seasoned, revered stage veteran. Her latest project is The Testament of Mary[8], a stage adaptation of a novella—about Christ’s mother in the days after his death—by Colm Tóibín. Opens Friday, April 26, 2013.
The Movie: Oscar-nominated director Deepa Mehta’s latest, Midnight’s Children[9], tells the tale of two young men—one rich, one poor—and the lives they lead after being switched at birth on the night India gained its independence. The film is based, of course, on the award-winning novel of the same name by Salman Rushdie[10]. Out Friday, April 26, 2013.
