On Location with Geoffrey Arend

While director Sean Hartofilis’ Beach Pillows[1] did most of its filming on Long Island—where this photo was shot—plenty of off-camera antics took place at a small apartment in Manhattan’s East Village.

“Vincent Kartheiser and I ended up living together in a small apartment in the East Village,” Geoffrey Arend, the film’s star, says. “One of the gifts of being an actor is that you can get transplanted to this other life that you maybe could have lived in another dimension—but there’s a time limit. So, we got to be roommates for four weeks in the middle of a hot, sweltering New York summer.”

While a van would pick the actors up each morning to take them to set, the actors made good use of their time in the apartment.

“We knew the apartment was going to be refinished after we moved out, so we stuck pages of the script onto the wall so that we could be on our feet rehearsing and run over to a wall to pick up a line,” Arend says. “We got to rehearse all the time and go over things we felt were important, but our apartment ended up looking a bit like a serial killer’s lair.”
