On Location with Molly Rankin

Toronto-based rock band Alvvays[1] will release their debut, self-titled album—nine rollicking songs of fuzzy power pop ideal to score your next pool party—this week, but thanks to the copious amount of time the five-piece has already spent on the road, they feel like old hands at rock stardom already.

As far as singer Molly Rankin’s concerned, even the new album is already feeling a bit dated. “We’ve had the record for six months, so I don’t think that we’re super nervous about it coming out,” she says. “We also didn’t finish it for a really long time, so we’re ready to go on tour and move on.”

In the coming months the band will tour the U.S., Canada and the U.K., but they recently made a quick trip to New York City to play a show at the South Street Seaport.

“There are always a few places that we go when we go to New York,” Rankin says. “It just seems like nothing there can really survive if it’s bad. We like to roam around for a couple of hours if we have the chance.”

As far as the gig itself, Rankin says outdoor shows come with their own complications.

“You can’t really see when your pedals are on,” she says. “The lights don’t illuminate the stage in same way. Also, you don’t really hear anything back; it all goes out into the air and never comes back. We did play a few outdoor gigs recently, though, so I think we’ll be okay.”
