When Academy Award–winning actress Mira Sorvino[1] joins the cast of Chicago on Broadway[2] next month, she will be fulfilling a lifelong dream.
“Theater was where I first fell in love with performing as a child—in school plays, musicals, and the New Jersey Classic Ballet’s professional production of The Nutcracker Suite,” Sorvino explains. “I grew up watching thrilling Broadway plays; seeing stellar performances such as Dianne Wiest and Frank Langella in After the Fall cemented my ambition to pursue acting professionally. At Harvard, I performed in several plays and musicals, including playing Aldonza/Dulcinea in Man of La Mancha, and was a founding member of the a cappella group the Veritones.”
“When I came to New York as a young actress, I appeared in a few off-Broadway plays and sang in cabarets, but then my film career took off and only rarely was I able to return to the stage. Over the years I’ve sung and danced in film and television projects such as Norma Jean and Marilyn, Summer of Sam, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion and most recently in Shining Vale. I’ve been studying jazz dance intensively for the past two years. The summer before last, I created my own one-woman show at the Carlyle My Life in 20 Songs. All of these experiences helped me reach a place where I longed for the chance to appear on Broadway. When the opportunity to join Chicago came along, it felt like the perfect moment to embrace that dream.”
From September 15 through November 2, Sorvino will take on the role of Roxie Hart in the long-running Broadway musical. “To join Chicago—such a legendary show, with such an incredible cast past and present—is literally a dream come true,” she says. “The rehearsal process, working with such high-caliber artists lovingly preparing me to join this most fabulous show, is the most thrilling, fun professional experience I could possibly imagine. Not everyone gets to live out a lifelong dream. I’m so very grateful, and I’m giving it every ounce of myself. I hope the audience will share in that joy and excitement.”
