This Week in Culture

Each week[1], there’s an avalanche of upcoming albums, films, books, theater and art—from monumental new voices in culture to guilty pleasures worth indulging in. We’re here to help narrow down what deserves your attention. Our picks for the week of June 24th are below:

The Album: Mavis Staples, the gospel legend, worked with indie titan Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco) on her new album, One True Vine[2], and the 73-year-old singer has never sounded better. Out Tuesday.

The Exhibit: The works of architect Renzo Piano—who’s designed, among other things, the New York Times building and the recent addition to Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner museum—is celebrated in Fragments[3], a show at the West 21st Street outpost of the Gagosian Gallery. Opens Thursday.

The Play: In playwright Steven Levenson’s The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin[4], at the Roundabout Theatre Company[5], family ties are put to the test as the title character—Treme’s David Morse—returns from jail and attempts to reunite with his brood. Opens Thursday.

The Movie: Beloved filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s latest, I’m So Excited[6], is a brainy, funny, exceedingly cheeky film about a not-so-friendly plane ride and the oddballs passengers (and stewards) who populate it. Opens Friday.
