This Week in Culture

Each week[1], there’s an avalanche of upcoming albums, films, books, theater and art—from monumental new voices in culture to guilty pleasures worth indulging in. We’re here to help narrow down what deserves your attention. Our picks for the week of June 17th are below:

The Album: While plenty of people will be focusing on Kanye West and his just-released Yeezus this week, it would be wise to save some time for Toronto-based Austra[2]. The band’s sophomore effort, Olympia, is a beautiful showcase for singer Katie Stelmanis’s huge voice and the group’s haunting, exciting songs. Out Tuesday.

The Play: Legally Blonde vet Nell Benjamin’s latest, The Explorers Club[3], at the Manhattan Theater Club[4], features the charming Jennifer Westfeldt as a 19th-century adventurer fighting for inclusion in this show’s titular London society. Opens Thursday.

The Exhibit: This week, conceptual maven James Turrell is set to unveil an exhibit at the Guggenheim[5] that showcases his well known manipulations of light and space and makes use of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structure itself. Works from earlier in Terrell’s career will be on view in conjunction. Opens Friday.

The Movie: It’s Brad Pitt versus a hungry army of zombies in the much-delayed World War Z[6], from Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster. But that should be a piece of cake for the dad of six. Opens Friday.
