DuJour Album of the Week: Kylie Minogue’s “Abbey Road Sessions”

Backed by an orchestra, the pop star takes a turn toward the upscale

Kylie Minogue has packed a lot into her 25-year-long career: numerous number-one hits, several film roles and a life in the public eye (well, everywhere in the world but in America). She’s best known here for high-energy tracks that have provided the score to many a night at a discotheque. With the Nov. 6 release of The Abbey Road Sessions, however, Minogue is showing off a more refined and, yes, classical side.

The album, recorded at the titular London studio, features many of Minogue’s biggest hits, from “Locomotion” to “I Just Can’t Get You Out Of My Head,” but instead of the usual synth-heavy production, the singer is now accompanied by a full orchestra, giving her songs an elegance and polish we’d never imagined.

Complemented by the previously unreleased track, “Flower”—you can see the video below—and a reworked version of the epic, dark duet “Where The Wild Roses Grow” (with Nick Cave), the songs remind us that Minogue, who sounds as if she’s genuinely enjoying herself throughout The Abbey Road Sessions, hasn’t stayed relevant for almost three decades due to dumb luck alone.

Does that mean Kylie Minogue’s giving up the dance floor in favor of the symphony? Only she knows. For now, enjoy these tasteful tracks that give the Aussie songstress a sophisticated sheen which suits her just as much as glitter ever did.
