It’s been six years since her last album, but singer Dido is finally back on the scene. Titled Girl Who Got Away, the singer’s new release has actually been in process for quite some time. “I had written all the songs before [giving birth to my son], but I did all the vocals while I was pregnant,” the “White Flag” singer told DuJour. “It was really fun, actually. I enjoyed signing while pregnant. It sort of changed the sound of my voice a bit in a way that I liked, and also I just really liked having him kicking away while I was singing. It made me laugh.”
Becoming a mother isn’t the only thing that has changed the British musician’s sound – a collaboration with rapper Kendrick Lamar, for “Let Us Move On,” stands out on the album. “We just felt like it needed that sort of extra story in there,” she said, “and we approached Kendrick because I really liked what he was doing and he came up with this amazing rap. I was so happy.” (And lets just say Dido has come a long way since she was in the back of Eminem’s car for the “Stan” music video in 2002.)
With all of the excitement, and change, in mind, Dido answers the DuJour Questionnaire:
What was the best day of your life?
Well, I have so many. I think one of the most memorable days was actually the first day that I met Clive Davis. I went with my brother and we met him in this hotel, at the time I was working in all these different jobs, and I just remember that meeting that changed my life. It was one of those moments where you’re just like, Wow! What just happened?
The worst?
The day my dad died.
If you could spend a day in someone else’s shoes, who would it be?
I would quite like to be Beyoncé for the day. Who wouldn’t, really? She’s just amazing, I’d dance all day, I’d sing all day, and I’d put on really cool clothes. I really wouldn’t mind being Beyoncé.
What’s your favorite hour of the day?
Probably the first thing in the morning, actually. I love it when my son wakes up and I can just go into his room and we hang out and make some breakfast. Like whatever has happened the day before, it just always feels like, you can just go to sleep. I’m very much that person who feels, It will all be better in the morning.
Did you break a sweat today?
I did, in quite an intimidating New York gym. It was funny, I was on the treadmill and I just got the sense that no one would really care if I fell off. It was quite scary.
If you wore a uniform every day, what would it be?
I think I would like to wear a fireman’s outfit. People like firemen – you can’t not like firemen, they’re heroes!
How would you spend your last day on Earth?
Have I only got a day?
Yeah, just one day.
I’m just being told that I’m going to die tomorrow.
The whole world is ending tomorrow.
I need to know the requirements. I would want to be with my husband and son if the world is ending, and, you know, just having fun, hanging out. I mean, it’s not enough time to go anywhere. If the world was ending I would quite like to be with my husband and son at the Grand Canyon. I’ve been there, my husband has been there, but my son hasn’t – and we haven’t all been there together. I’m dying to take them.
