Anchored Woman: Christina Applegate

When it comes to preparing for highly publicized red carpet events, Hollywood starlets are notorious for juice cleansing[1], masochistic exercise routines and bizarre detox remedies[2]. Christina Applegate couldn’t care less about such painstaking preparation—or what people think about her, either, quite frankly.

“I’m not going to lie to people about who I am. If I’ve been lazy for the last month, then you’re going to get to see what I look like after being lazy. I wish that people didn’t put that kind of pressure on themselves. What a burden,” she tells DuJour in a recent interview. “You’re lucky if I have the energy to shave my legs. That’s about as strict as I get before a red carpet.”

The former Up All Night star and fruitwater spokesperson is equally candid about other subjects. Among them: her feelings on exercise, her struggles playing Kelly Bundy on Married With Children and her reunion with the cast of Anchorman for the forthcoming sequel. Here, she chats with DuJour.

What’s your stance on exercise: Love it or hate it?
Before I had a child I worked out six days a week like a crazy person. Between going to three-hour dance classes or spin classes or running outside or training with my trainer, I did something every day. Since I had Sadie, I just haven’t wanted to take three hours away. So my workout was a little sad for the first year and a half. Now I do 30 minutes of cardio and then I train with a trainer right after. I get it all in when she’s taking a nap or at school.

What type of cardio do you prefer?
I have my own spin bike at home—I was an assistant teacher at my old studio. I have a stereo next to me playing music, but then I’m also watching Minute to Win It. I have 75 DVR’d episodes of Minute to Win It. It helps distract me from getting bored.

Do you have any guilty pleasures?
I like pizza and burritos. I really like burritos from Poquito Mas. I’ll go once every other month. Pizza is more often; a burrito is once every few months.

What’s one food you lived on during your childhood or as a teen that you’d think twice before eating today?
Before I became a vegetarian when I was 14, we at a lot of meat. I ate a lot of steaks and pork chops and things like that.

After being a vegetarian for so long, do you ever just crave a burger?
The other day my husband was having a pepperoni pizza and without even thinking I just took a bite of it. It felt really good. My husband was like, “Why did you do that?!” and I was like, “I don’t know! It just seemed like the right thing to do!” The next morning I woke up and my throat was literally on fire. I guess my body was rejecting it. That won’t happen again.

Is there a routine you stick to prior to a red carpet event?
You’re lucky if I have the energy to shave my legs. That’s about as strict as I get before a red carpet. Look, I’m not that guy. I think of myself as an actor; I don’t think of myself as a model. Why do I need to look like that? My body’s my body. I am who I am.

Have you had that attitude your whole life?
No, I was not like that my whole life. I battled with all of that when I was younger, and there’s a moment in time when you get into your late 20s and early 30s and you just say, “This is my own skin.” It doesn’t matter what other people think. Having played Kelly Bundy—that was really hard. I had to wear those mini-skirts every week. So it was part of the job in a weird way. When I left there, I just released that feeling. I didn’t ever want to feel like that again.

Did you always feel you were under the microscope based on your weight?
Actresses put the pressure on themselves more than anything. As the viewer, when I’m watching a movie I don’t sit there and go, “Gosh, this performance is really incredible. But if she could only be five pounds less…” If you’re good at what you do, who cares what you look like? Seriously. I think there’s a lot of people who’ve proved that.

Now that you have a daughter, do you ever think about how about how she’ll be affected by media and fashion magazines?
I don’t worry because I’m a good mom. And my husband is a good father. We don’t sit there and say, “You’re beautiful” all the time. We say, “You’re so smart. You’re so funny. You’re so interesting.” We praise her for things that she does and not what she looks like. We give her individuality. There’s no pressure to have the stuff mommy bought at that boutique in New York. We don’t do that shit.

Your fans are dying for the Anchorman sequel to come out in December. Was it nostalgic for you to be back and filming with the whole cast?
Yes! Oh my God, come on, we’ve been chomping at the bit for ten years to get back together. It was really special and especially our first table read. Just seeing everyone and how excited we all were. We ran into each other’s arms and were like “Oh my God! I can’t believe we’re here! I can’t believe we’re doing this!” It was a great day.

Is everyone as funny out of character as they are in character?
Yes. Just a lot more crass. But you know what I love about those four dudes? Every weekend they flew home to see their families. Every single weekend. No matter what time they wrapped on a Friday, no matter what time they had to be on set on Monday, they were home. And that is just a testament to the kind of beautiful men they are. I was really lucky to be with them.
