Barneys[1] is heading back to its old stomping grounds. The high-end retailer’s long-awaited journey to its ancestral location—a picturesque Chelsea block where it was founded in 1923—is officially in completion mode as of today, which is great news for prospective shoppers in the downtown area. And it’s even better than before—if you can believe it.

The new 55,000 square foot flagship, designed by Steven Harris Architects, spans five floors and features ultra-chic modern trimmings—think: marble-lined walls, mohair and velvet sofas and brass tables—throughout the space. Cosmetics, skincare, fragrances and special men’s barbershop by Blind Barber—a full-service salon-cum-cocktail club that’s already a favorite of the downtown crowd—are housed on the lower level, with men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, footwear, accessories and fine jewelry spread out on the floors above. A grand spiral staircase that runs through the central atrium encourages shoppers to discover all facets of the store.

“The opening of our new Downtown flagship is a unique homecoming for Barneys New York,” says Barneys New York CEO Mark Lee in a release. “Born as a single brick-and-mortar location over 90 years ago, Barneys New York returns to the same New York City block as a modern 21st century retail force that will offer the downtown customer a unique and unprecedented customer experience.”

The retailer’s Madison Avenue flagship still leads in size, but when it comes to reliving iconic history, this Barneys locale sure feels like home.
