The vibe backstage at a fashion show[1] is always a mix of chaos and cool—flurries of hurried hair-and-makeup artists working their magic on models, and then the girls themselves, looking just as stunning wearing leggings in a prep chair as they do working a gown on the runway. Sometimes, the beauty behind the scenes is just as eye-catching, if not more so, than the end results we finally see under the lights and in the pages of magazines. This season in particular paid tribute to the au natural look[2], with barely-there blush and minimal eye makeup at Proenza Schouler and Rodarte. Other shows, like Jason Wu and Altuzarra, added a bold lip or glittery gold eye to a barefaced palate. Hair was left wispy in most cases, with sleek ponytails and highlighted side-swept locks thrown into the mix. In all, the work in creating this season’s beauty trends, though often minimal, was nothing short of genius. Captured by photographer Drew Innis, DuJour takes a look at the pure beauty behind the process at a few spring 2014 shows.
