To coincide with the much-anticipated second season premiere of the HBO show GIRLS[1] this Sunday, January 13, nail guru Deborah Lippmann is launching a set of four new nail lacquers. Inspired by the four main characters—Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna and Jessa—Lippmann talked to DuJour about the collaboration, her favorite GIRLS moment so far and why it’s impossible for her to ever choose just one color.
How did this collection come about?
I’ve known Lena personally for a long time and I donated a polish called “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” [a coral-hued tone] for the season one premiere party gift bag. The day after, Lena sent me a picture of her wearing the polish with a note that said “Can’t Hannah have her own hunter green color?” I was jumping up and down with excitement! Initially we just created a color for Hannah but each [character] has such a unique personality that we decided they should have their own shades.
How did you chose the colors for each girl?
It was a complete collaboration with Lena. Each shade reflects the individual character—the collection is meant to be playful and fun but also celebrate the various dimensions of feminine identity. Lena’s dark green is gritty, almost-dirty, yet Marnie’s is a prim and proper pink. Shoshanna is a late bloomer, so we did a virtuous, vivid violet. Jessa’s shade took the longest to create but it is the most open—the burgundy red is sexy and bohemian.
If you could only wear one nail polish color for the rest of your life, what would it be?
It would probably be a red similar to Jessa’s, but every creation is like my child so it’s very Sophie’s Choice!
What has been your favorite GIRLS moment so far?
When Hannah was riding on Adam’s bike and he suddenly stops short and she falls over—I feel like that has happened to me so many times! There are lots of moments like that one. She [Lena] is so good for women; she’s so intelligent and witty but knows she’s not perfect and isn’t afraid to show her flaws.
The limited-edition set, $45, is available starting January 15 at lippmanncollection.com[2] and at the HBO Store, store.hbo.com[3]. And check out the trailer for the new season below.
