Your new film Carol is set in the 1950s. What do you love about the style of that era?
What [director] Todd Haynes, set designer Judy Becker and costume designer Sandy Powell have really done is they’ve gone for the pre-commodified 1950s look. It’s a very spare, very austere world where women who have been in the war and fought alongside men are being stuffed back into this really barren life in the home. But I do love a girdle and I love a red lip. I love that womanly silhouette.
What’s your beauty regimen?
I’ve been doing it for so long. The range has expanded a lot, but it will always be SK-II Mid-Day Essence[1] and LXP Ultimate Revival Cream and Serum[2]. When I’m on a plane, I put on the SK-II Facial Treatment Mask[3] or the Cellumination Mask-in Lotion[4]. If I’m up on stage, then I will use the cleanser or the cleansing oil to take the makeup off.

What are your biggest skincare concerns?
Since I’ve been using SK-II, those eruptions that one gets just haven’t happened. I think the consistency over the last 14 years has been working for my skin.
What’s the best beauty tip you’ve ever received?
Morag Ross, who is a very dear friend of mine, and who did the makeup on Carol and Cinderella, does a great lip. I keep trying to do her lip. And what she does is she uses a cream-colored pencil and outlines the lip. I’m getting to the point where it’s a bit hard for me to do it, but that little cat eye with eyeliner is also a great look.
What’s your daily look when you’re at home?
You know some mornings perversely when I am feeling crappy, when I’m running out the door with the kids, in my sweats and my hair is all over the place, I will put a bright pink lip on. Fuck it. Sometimes it can cheer you up. I don’t tend to wear a lot day-to-day. I’ll put sunscreen on[5]. Then I might spot cover a bit. Bobbi Brown makes a great creamy concealer palette[6].

Do you have a favorite fragrance?
I really like Armani Si Intense[7] [which hasn’t yet launched in the U.S.] and their Privé scents.

How do you cope with nonstop movie promotion schedules?
Unfortunately, both movies are coming out in three weeks. I tried…I said, ‘please don’t!’ But that was what was decided. I’ve crammed it in. And then I’ll go back to Sydney and see the children. And then come back here for another couple weeks. We are also in the process of moving houses, so it’s all crazy with boxes. Happily, the kids are quite good with chaos.
