Have Scent, Will Travel

The latest collection to come from Lisa Hoffman’s eponymous beauty line[1] is truly a feast for all senses. Characterized by gorgeous semiprecious stones and the placement of a signature charm that gradually releases scent, the new Couture Collection of fragrance bracelets is the company’s second—and most elaborate—foray into fine fragrance jewelry.

“When I lose myself in fragrance I not only smell it, I see it,” Hoffman, founder and president of the award-winning beauty company, told DuJour. “The materials used to make the jewelry for both the Classic and Couture collection are visual representations of my interpretation of the scents.”

The six bracelets in the Couture Collection[2] are crafted with 14-karat gold, rose gold or sterling silver and feature semiprecious stones like amethyst, bronzite, ruby, mother of pearl, carnelian and jade, and each piece is specially made to order, which differentiates itself from the Classic Collection. Each bracelet also includes scent-infused beads that releases Lisa Hoffman’s signature fragrances: Madagascar Orchid, Tunisian Neroli, French Clary Sage, Tuscan Fig, Japanese Agarwood, and her most recent creation, Kerala Ashok Garden.

“My newest fragrance is a really lush scent with top notes of violet, pear and jasmine with the Ashok blossom at its heart,” said Hoffman, explaining that the flower has a special place in Indian lore as one of the flowers carried by Kamadeva, the Indian god of love. “The inspiration really came from the description of Kamadeva’s arrows because I could practically smell the flowers together. It really captured my imagination.”

Each of Hoffman’s fragrances, including the Ashok blend, is carefully concocted using “headspace technology,” a technique that collects the chemical composition of the scents of plants and flowers without harming the plant. “It enables me, and other perfumers, to use really elusive scents that would normally not be available,” said Hoffman, who often bases fragrances on her own travel memories. “This technology helps me truly recreate my scent experiences from the places I have been.”

What lies ahead? Hoffman’s bringing her fragrance jewelry concept to a new collaboration with Waris Ahluwalia of House of Waris. “He’s so talented, so original,” she said. “I’m so excited about the collection we’re creating together.”
