We’re clearly fans of DuJour cover star Daniel Craig’s style both off screen and when he’s in Bond mode. So we’re double-oh excited to be able to talk about two limited edition Omega Seamasters associated with Craig’s latest film, SPECTRE.
Just as Bond is the first thing we think of when we hear the word “spy,” the Seamaster is one of the most iconic of dive watches. Launched in 1948, it was based on the waterproof wristwatches made for the British military at the end of World War II. And like the Bond character, the timepiece was designed for an individual who needs a watch that worked for “town, sea and country.”
In the movies, James Bond has worn a Seamaster since Pierce Brosnan strapped one on in 1995’s Goldeneye. But like one of Q’s gadgets, the models worn in the movies were never available for purchase—until now. To commemorate its history with the James Bond movies, Omega has released the 007 50th Anniversary Collector’s Piece Seamaster Co-Axial 300M.
An updated take on a 1957 Seamaster design, this handsome hunk of horology is housed in a stainless steel set on a NATO strap and is available in two sizes. Just as Craig brings a bit of darkness to his interpretation of Bond, the most alluring detail of the Seamaster Co-Axial 300M is its striking black dial, new “lollipop” central seconds hand, classic broad arrow hour hand and recessed triangular hour markers. The 12-hour, bi-directional rotating bezel is also black, made from polished ceramic.
The 007 Seamaster Co-Axial is also a working watch. It features the 8400 caliber, Omega’s innovative in-house Co-Axial escapement designed to enhance performance by reducing friction. And its antimagnetic movement is resistant to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. (All the wee parts of a mechanical watch can be negatively affected by the magnetic fields generated by all the tech that surrounds us.)
Again the Anniversary Edition Co-Axial 300 is virtually identical to the one worn by Craig in SPECTRE—except that the case back is engraved with the “Spectre” logo and the watch’s individual serial number. And the 007 gun logo is etched onto the strap holder.
The second model, aimed more for those who collect Bond-inspired Omegas, is a limited edition Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M with a dial inspired by the Bond family coat of arms and an automatic movement with an oscillating weight cut and shaped like 007’s classic gun barrel symbol.
We think that Craig’s brooding Bond is the perfect 007 for our times. He has a history but is not afraid of the ever changing world in which we live in. (Sorry, couldn’t resist a Live and Let Die reference.) And the same holds true for the Seamaster.
