Is the Upper East Side the New Meatpacking District?

Alexander McQueen is the next high-end retailer making a Madison Avenue move

It’s the end of an era in New York’s Meatpacking District: Alexander McQueen’s flagship store has moved out and into a swank new address on the Upper East Side. With a recent exodus of some of the area’s high-end retailers, including Stella McCartney and Matthew Williamson, it’s not totally surprising that McQueen’s decided to head uptown.

It’s a smart location that reflects the interior of the new space, outfitted with luxurious finishings like cornice work decorated with feathers, corals, wings and florals and furniture adorned with bronze animal feet and claws. The design work draws a clear influence from McQueen’s designer Sarah Burton, as well as the touches of David Collins Studio‘s creative director Simon Rawlings.

If the flagship’s eleven-year success in Meatpacking is any indication, the downtown McQueen clientele won’t mind a 45-block cab ride up to the label’s newest home—on the end of town where luxury first opened shop.
