Room Request! The Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard

Newly opened in May, the Shangri-La at the Shard[1] occupies floors 34 to 52 of Renzo Piano’s 87-story glass-clad masterpiece on London’s South Bank—making it the tallest structure in Western Europe. For its first property in the U.K., Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotel Group brings its signature Asian flair to the British capital, with modern Chinese art, plush kimonos in all 202 guest rooms and an Eastern culinary influence.

DuJour spoke to Marta Warren, the hotel’s Director of Communications, about the room guests request most often.

The Iconic City View Room

The Iconic City View Room

The most requested room:

The Iconic City View Room.

What makes it so special:

The room offers triple aspect views of the city—that’s 270 degrees of London and its historic landmarks, from Parliament and the London Eye to the Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe, Borough Market and the Thames River meandering eastward to Canary Wharf. A desk in the living area is equipped with binoculars and an iPad that points out all of the prominent landmarks.

The rate:

£600 per night

Celebrity guests:

Unfortunately, we can’t divulge the list of celebrities who have stayed with us, but the rooms themselves, as well as the 52nd floor lounge, Gong, have quickly become a hot spot for watching the rapidly evolving London skyline. You never know who you might see!

Your personal favorite:

Room 5001, the Tower Bridge Room.

Because…

It has a fabulous tub in the middle of the bathroom that overlooks Tower Bridge. You can take in the gleaming city below while you soak!

Fun fact:

Substantial Roman remains as well as foundations and objects from the Saxon and Medieval times were uncovered during the hotel’s construction. The South Bank of London is a fascinating convergence of old and new. You’ll see giant modern skyscrapers mere blocks from ancient Roman baths.
