Drink DuJour: The Rose Among Thorns

A smooth cocktail served up at a historic locale

New York City’s Greenwich Village is filled with history. Take, for example, 116 MacDougal Street­­, which in its 1960s heyday was frequented by Beat legends like Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso—not to mention artists like Bob Dylan.

Now, the landmark space is home to elegant subterranean cocktail den The Up&Up (think: vintage floral wallpaper, brown leather banquettes and brass light fixtures), which opened its doors this week and will surely make a name for itself within the buzzing bar scene. The menu features plenty of must-try experimental cocktail variations, and below we’ve got the recipe for one of the signature blends.

“The Rose Among Thorns is my preferred martini spec, which is adding a touch of bitters or amaro, along with the addition of Aquavit, one of my favorite spirits,” says owner and bartender Matthew Piacentini. “It is named The Rose Among Thorns because it’s so smooth and beautiful despite the somewhat intense ingredients.” 

Here’s what you’ll need.

ROSE AMONG THORNS

2 dashes orange bitters
½ oz Dolin Dry Vermouth
½ oz Amaro Montenegro
1 oz Citadelle Gin
1 oz Krogstad Aquavit

Stir with ice and strain into a double old fashioned glass with a large rock in it.
