Room Request! Bayerischer Hof

Step inside a historic suite at one of Germany’s most storied hotels

The list of prominent guests who’ve paid a visit to Munich’s Bayerischer Hof reads like an all-star roster of contemporary culture: musicians (Michael Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, the Beatles); actors (Grace Kelly, Cameron Diaz, Samuel L. Jackson); politicians (Hillary Clinton); and influential figures like Albert Einstein, the Dalai Lama and Sigmund Freud have all checked in over the course of the hotel’s 175-year history. The remarkable range reflects Bayerischer Hof’s “something for everyone” design ethos. There is a suite for just about any style, from modern cosmopolitan to timeless Colonial—and everything in between.

Located in Munich’s city center, Bayerischer Hof (a member of The Leading Hotels of the World) is a mini-metropolis in its own right. Five restaurants, six bars, a jazz club and a theater are all on the premises, in addition to 340 guest rooms. The property was originally commissioned by King Ludwig I as a place to entertain his guests, and it was later purchased by German hotelier Hermann Volkhardt in 1897. It has remained a family owned and operated hotel ever since.

Innegrit Volkhardt, Bayerischer Hof’s owner and general manager, shares the inside scoop on the five-star property below.

The most requested room:
A lot of requests come for our Penthouse Suites—705 or 770. They have private terraces overlooking the Munich skyline and the Alps at the horizon. Or the Palais Presidential Suites—032 or 035—which have a palace-like feeling.

What makes it so special:
Presidential Suite 032 is located in the historic Palais Montgelas, a separate annex built in the classical style in 1811. The suite houses valuable antiques and exquisite fabrics. It’s traditional European elegance at its best with unmatched views of Promenadeplatz square. Penthouse Suite 705 is another popular choice. The open marble fireplace, spiral staircase leading up to the gallery bedroom and roof terrace with a fountain, sun loungers and a dining area, make this suite highly desired by our guests.
