Room Request! Hotel Commonwealth

Once upon a time, Kenmore Square was the epicenter of Boston’s[1] rock scene boasting raucous nightclubs and greasy spoons that stayed open until the wee hours of the morning. These days, the neighborhood is a bit more refined—the rock clubs have given way to upscale eateries and destination shopping—but it’s still one of the most exciting areas in town.

Plenty of the new sheen comes thanks to Hotel Commonwealth[2], which just celebrated its 12th birthday with a $50 million expansion and renovation. The expansive hotel, which added 96 new rooms and suites, is home to a popular craft cocktail bar as well as two of Boston’s best restaurants, the seafood-forward Island Creek Oyster Bar and the award-winning Eastern Standard, which serves Continental fare with a New England twist. The Commonwealth is also beloved for its proximity to what might be Boston’s greatest attraction: Fenway Park. The hotel and the iconic baseball field are neighbors and friends; it’s a relationship that’s had a big impact on the recent overhaul.

Here, General Manager Adam Sperling tells DuJour about the most sought after room at the property.

The most requested room

The Fenway Park Suite

What makes it special:

For many baseball fans[3], attending a game at Fenway Park is on their bucket list. When we recently expanded the hotel, we had an opportunity to create a suite with an amazing vantage point of the park. When you stand on the balcony, you can feel the energy of Fenway. It’s almost as if you can reach out and touch it. We also stocked the room with one-of-kind memorabilia that all pays homage to the park. For example, we have the actual #6 from the Green Monster scoreboard that the Red Sox presented to Johnny Pesky when they retired his number. Other items in the suite include an actual pitching rubber signed by Pedro Martinez, a home plate signed by Jason Veritek, a unique multimedia piece that honors Fenway Park along with many great vintage baseball cards and signed baseballs. Our relationship with the Red Sox as the Official Hotel allowed us to bring in actual ballpark seats from Fenway. At turndown, guests receive two small packages of authentic Fenway dirt, allowing them to take home a piece of the park. The Red Sox also worked with us to create a signed coffee table with signatures from both current and legendary players.

The rate:

The suite starts at $749.

Your personal favorite:

The Loft Suite

Because…

It’s so unexpected—starting with the door, which was custom painted to look like a metal door in an industrial loft. Once inside, guests are greeted by a living area with 16-foot ceilings, a gas fireplace in front of a white washed brick wall and a pool table. All of the artwork in the suite was created by current or former students of the Boston University School of Fine Arts. When you stay in The Loft, it’s like you are in someone’s amazing apartment in the city rather than a hotel room.

Celebrity guests

We are fortunate to have hosted many Red Sox and baseball legends including Pedro Martinez, Carlton Fisk, Luis Tiant, Fred Lynn, Peter Gammons and Theo Epstein. Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky was the first guest of our Baseball Suite.

Fun fact

The iconic live music venue “The Rathskeller” was located on the ground that the hotel now occupies.
