Taste the spice this National Tequila Day with a Tequila Sommelier’s fiery treat

Tucked away in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen, you’ll find a dimly lit, intimate eatery with what some call the most eclectic selections of tequilas, mezcals and Mexican distillations found on this side of the Hudson. Noted for its extensive tequila list, there is no better way to celebrate National Tequila Day in New York City than Añejo. And, there’s no better cocktail to enjoy than Añejo’s Tequila Sommelier Amanda Swanson’s El Pimiento.
The recipe starts with 100% Blue Agave Tequila, Chamucos Reposado, which is a mischievous tequila, much like its hand-blown bottle painted with a dark, shadowy nighttime creature. Ancho Reyes is then added, which is a spicy, smoky and sweet chile liqueur. The Hellfire bitters bring the heat while simultaneously complementing the Ancho Reyes. The contrasting lime juice provides new flavor layers and the red pepper puree anchors the complex spices that will flood your mouth.
Swanson designs each cocktail to complement each and every dish on the authentic menu. In addition to being an expert at flavor profiling, education on distilling and brand awareness and creating tastes to accompany delicious food, Swanson’s expertise in creating cocktails like El Pimiento prove the distinction between just an expert and a true Tequila Sommelier. Enjoy National Tequila Day with one of the delectable libations at Añejo or try to recreate El Pimiento on your own at home. See below for the full recipe.
5 oz Chamucos Reposado
.75 oz Ancho Verde
