On Location with The Wytches

Brighton-based trio The Wytches haven’t yet released their first album—that record, Annabel Dream Reader, comes out August 26—but the psych-tinged rock band already has quite a following, having been heralded by the British press as the Next Big Thing.

Earlier in the summer, the group made their way across the U.S. on their very first stateside tour—which took them from Portland to Chicago and New York—an experience frontman Kristian Bell says has been different from anything that came before it.

“A lot more is happening than usual on tour,” he says with a laugh. “We’ve met more people than we usually do. We hung around the venues longer than we would after the show because we were enjoying ourselves, having some good fun.”

And while being on the road has been a blast for the boys, the forthcoming release of their debut album seems to be somewhat less exhilarating.

“We recorded it like a year ago now so now I’m not that excited,” Bell says. “It feels to me like it’s been out for about four years now.”

Luckily the band has plenty to look forward to. In addition to the record release—and a sophomore album Bell says is in the works—the band will be traveling throughout their homeland, taking part in an English rite of passage.

“We are in England as soon as we get home, just doing summer festivals,” Bell says. “There’s a lot of summer festivals in England—some would say too many.”
