One Moment of Truth

Late one night in 1976, fashion guru Isaac Mizrahi discovered he was destined to be a designer

Over the course of his 30-year career, Isaac Mizrahi has dabbled in just about every corner of the fashion industry. He’s designed womenswear, menswear and accessories, plus costumes for Broadway, the New York Metropolitan Opera and the American Ballet Theater. Now, Mizrahi (pictured here the early ’90s) is taking his talents to a smaller market—he’s collaborating with the renowned Madame Alexander Doll Company on a collection of dolls and apparel, including a $1,000 “couture” collectible doll. The New York-based designer remembers the exact moment he discovered his love of the fashion industry. He shares it with DuJour below:

I was 15 and it was 1976 and I sat up all night obsessing about this one issue of Vogue. I think it was the July issue—it had the portfolio of pictures from the Fall collections. They were Avedon pictures with Patty Hansen and Janice Dickenson in Fall clothes, and I distinctly remember that there was a lace tunic with white ribbed wooly tights. Just the styling of those pictures, the wit, the perfection!
